Barber Tutorial
Barbering Instructional Video Project’ & ‘AC1: Informing Ideas
Identifying the Client:
The Client for this project is The Sunderland College, Salon professionals Department and they offer a barbering course at Sunderland College, City Campus for ages 16-18. The learners on this course are studying Level 2 and Level 3. I have been asked to plan, film and edit one barbering tutorial guide.
Identifying the audience:
The audience of this product are the students that are working on the barbering course at Sunderland College.
The demographic focuses more on teenagers/ young adults between ages 16-18 years old . These are also students that are learning about barbering.
In order to make sure that my video appeals to my target audience, I could make sure that my tutorial video contains the typical codes and conventions of a tutorial video. For example, the video needs to be informative, it needs to contain music, it needs to be condensed into steps and easy to follow/understand.
The key topics that I can include in the video are the techniques used as well as the equipment used.
The tutorial video is going to be viewed in Sunderland College, City Campus. This relates to my audience's needs because this will be shown to a group of those who are studying barbering and that is my target audience.
I also analysed two barbering tutorial videos.
The first video: https://youtu.be/jp-fXpAFgD4
This video consisted of a men's hair cut tutorial featuring close-up shots, big close-up shots and medium close-up shots little to no editing other than an occasional jump cut.
There are many indexes included in the background of the video. For example, some of these indexes include items such as razors, scissors and hairdryers. This lets me know that this video is going to be a barbering video.
In the bottom right hand corner of the video, there is a watermark which says "REGAL GENTLEMEN" This is used to identify their YouTube channel. This is known as an icon.
One example of some of the the key features of this video is the barber's narration. This is a very key feature because this is what makes this video a tutorial video. The barber does this in order to explain his reasoning behind certain techniques and why particular choices are needed to achieve the desired results.
This video is effective because it is a straightforward, concise, detailed and easy to follow video that gives a guide as promised and is not misleading at all.
There were no identifiable weaknesses of the video which stood out to me and the video seemed very easy to follow and understand.
The Second Video: This video contains the same camera angles as the prior video. With that being close-up shots, big close-up shots and medium close-up shots
The lighting used in this video is high-key lighting. This is used because as this is a tutorial video, it is important to be able to see every detail.
Barbering Instructional Video Project’ ‘AC1: Informing Ideas’ ‘AC5 Communication
From the existing product analysis, I have learned that a simple and concise video is more effective for educational purposes and therefore this is what I will apply to my video. I have also learned that close up shots are very key in a tutorial video because the audience needs a clear view of what is occurring during the video. This is also something that I am going to apply to my video.

Feedback:
From this feedback, I have learned that my video was good however the footage lacked stability and was out of focus at times. It also requires narration as the barbering process was not easy to follow
The improvements I would make consist of:
- Some from of narration, whether that to be audio or through text.
- Adding an outro/ conclusion to the video.
- Better stabilisation of the footage possibly by implementing the use of a tripod and manual focus to avoid inconsistent focus from the camera.
From this feedback, I have learned that my video was very bland and basic and therefore, requires narration, an intro and a better quality of footage. I will make sure that i apply all of these things to the final piece as well.
Editing Practice:
The practice edit first consisted of a black screen featuring text, detailing the contents of the video and the tools used in the video. I also imported a Royalty Free Soundtrack from Bensound.com. The editing software that I used to produce this practice tutorial video was Adobe Premiere Pro CC 2019. This software was very easy to navigate because the interface was very clear and concise.
Filming Practice:
When practising our filming, we used Canon 1200D DSLR cameras. To record with these cameras, we used tripods as well as holding the cameras ourselves. The shots that we used mostly consisted of close up shots as well as medium close up shots.
